Doctors call back pain that is located in the upper back area thoracic back pain. The rest of us just call it upper back pain. Most adults have had to deal with this type of pain at one time or another in their lives. Thoracic pain is usually caused by stress to the upper part of the back. Although in some cases the causes may be more serious. Upper back pain can also be caused by a slipped disc or injury to the nerves or vertebrae.
In today’s society, adults are much less active than they were in previous years. Many of us have jobs that involve sitting stationary at our desks. We end up working in front of a computer screen without an ergonomically designed working environment. Since the muscles in our upper backs are not as strong as the muscles in the lower back area, sitting hunched over most of the day ends up putting a major amount of stress on our upper back muscles.
Right now, trying to take notice of in which position you sure those are. If your shoulders are a little high then you are putting enormous pressure on your shoulder and neck muscles. Keeping your shoulders high all the time will give you pain in your upper back.
If you want to squash back pain permanently, then you must become very aware of the strain you’re putting on your back muscles and alter your posture and positioning. Throughout the day, start paying attention to how you’re holding your shoulders. If at any time your shoulders are under strain, then adjust yourself. Your shoulders should always be relaxed. Think about carrying heavy grocery bags. When have one in each hand, what are your shoulders doing? Keep that mental image and that will help you drop your shoulders. Then notice the lack of strain in your upper back.
If you keep experiencing pain in your upper back, even after paying attention to your shoulders, work environment and daily habits, then you should consider getting a training program that is specially designed towards your upper back. You can always take the easy route out, and go to your doctor and get a subscription for some painkillers. However, that’s a really, really bad solution and it will only make your problem worse in the long run.
